Bird photography is a very challenging endeavor, requiring good photographic skills and equipment. Patience and preparation, learning the bird’s behavior and habitat are also requirements for success in capturing avian behavior. Photographic skill and gear alone will not ensure success, although good quality lenses and equipment are the tools of the trade. I would argue that one more aspect is required, an inviting environment. When I installed a beautiful granite rock fountain and set it on top of a large reservoir of fresh water, I created a stage that birds cannot resist.
Birds of all species have refreshed themselves at my fountain. With the wonders of remote control, I have captured photographs of the most fascinating bird behavior, splashing, drinking, squabbling, courting and other avian antics. I hope that at least some of the joy that these feathered creatures have given to me over the years will inspire others.
